Shopping for Comfortable Shoes for Men
Good fit, durability and style are three of the most important factors to consider when purchasing new footwear. Nevertheless, the single most important purchasing criterion remains comfort.
There's no point in buying shoes that will pinch your toes and cramp your feet all day long. Sporting uncomfortable shoes for long periods of time isn't only unbearable, but it could also permanently damage your feet and your overall posture.
That said, make that extra effort to find a pair of shoes that look good, but more importantly, feel great on your feet. Let's face it, times have changed; it's now possible to find extremely stylish footwear that is equally as comfortable.
when to shop for shoes?
You should always purchase your shoes later on during the day or in the evening, since that's the point when your feet are at their largest. (Too bad that doesn't apply to every other body part.)
shopping for comfort
When shopping for shoes, always remember to bring along your own pair of socks. Even better; bring those that you're planning on wearing with your new shoes.
Shoe stores normally have spare pairs of socks hanging around if ever you need them, but a slight difference in thickness could affect the fit substantially. Not to mention that you also risk catching the previous guy's "athletic" qualities.
Once you've slipped on both shoes, lace or buckle them up the way you would normally do and make sure you take your time to walk around the store. You should feel at ease and comfortable during your entire tryout. Remember, you're the customer, so if a salesperson pressures you into buying, by telling you that the shoe will stretch if they feel too tight for example, politely tell him to take a walk of his own.
shoe specific
Generally, quality items come with higher price tags, but bear in mind that most of the time you're getting what you pay for. First-class shoes are more likely to hold their shape without stretching, giving your feet long-term comfort.
what to look for?
Upper Part
When examining the upper part of the shoe, look for high quality materials like high-end leathers or synthetic fabrics, which will allow your feet to breathe with ease. Walking around with sweaty feet all day can be really uncomfortable, and may make your feet smell like Parmesan cheese.
A softer upper portion is generally better unless you have problems with the balls of your feet. In that case, a slightly stiffer design is recommended to reduce the stress from your foot.
Your shoes should generally be light and flexible, but most importantly, they should feel comfortable right away. So many people assume that with time their shoes will eventually stretch out and provide extra comfort. This assumption is often wrong, and your feet will just end up suffering for nothing. Shoes can become more comfortable once you break them in, but if they're not comfortable to begin with when you're trying them on in the store, chances are they will never be.
Lining
Lining, which is the inside part the shoe, should be smooth and preferably seamless, providing a more comfortable fit. Take a quick look inside the shoe to see whether its construction is solid, to avoid having a ripped up lining that starts slipping after two weeks.
Soles
Flat soles are ideal, but you'll generally purchase shoes with a gentle slope upwards, under the toes. For maximum comfort, opt for shoes with somewhat rounded outsoles; they'll encourage you to move off of the heel and onto the toes as you're walking.
Heels
Heels account for the largest proportion of the shoe's weight, and they help maintain your body's position. For that reason, you should choose shoes with a slightly wider heel area for extra balance and cushioning.
Research shows that heels that are approximately half an inch high are perfect since they'll help you avoid overstretching your Achilles tendons. Also, make an effort to look for shoes with adequate heel counters since they'll help you maintain good heel position when the shoe contacts the ground. The heel counter should generally compliment the shape of your foot.
The next time you're going shopping for new shoes, keep these tips in mind. Your shoes should be snug enough to hold your feet firmly while allowing enough room to wiggle your toes.
Until next time, keep on stylin' in comfortable shoes.
